The name Amara comes from the Sanskrit word "अमर", meaning immortal or eternal. It evokes a sense of transcendence and spirituality, perfectly in tune with the dreamy and meditative nature of this handpan's sound. Though it may remind Italian speakers of the word “amaro” (bitter), its true meaning speaks of eternal beauty and timeless music.

The scale is based on the Aeolian mode, also known as the natural minor scale—one of the most beloved and widely used in Western music history for its ability to express melancholy, sweetness, and introspection. Great composers like Bach and Beethoven often chose E minor to convey deep and universal emotions: from the drama of the Toccata and Fugue to the heroic tension of the Fifth Symphony.

But E Amara is also a bridge between cultures: it recalls the emotional qualities of the evening ragas in Indian classical music, which evoke contemplation, serenity, and inner connection. A perfect fusion of Eastern sensitivity and Western structure.

There is no "better" frequency—it depends on how you intend to use the instrument.
If your goal is to play with other musicians (not necessarily handpan players), the 440Hz tuning will make it easier to play together, as most instruments are tuned to this standard.
