How Is a Handpan Tuned? Inside the Making of a Handcrafted Instrument

The handcrafted handpan is one of the most fascinating and mysterious musical instruments of recent years. Those who see it for the first time often ask: how is it tuned? It doesn’t have strings like a guitar, nor keys like a piano. Yet it is perfectly in tune.

In this article, I’ll take you inside the world of handpan making, explaining how a hand-made handpan is created and tuned.

How a Handcrafted Handpan Is Made

It all starts with a steel sheet. What initially looks like a metallic mirror becomes, through precise work, a resonant dome.

The sheet is shaped with a plate hammer until it achieves the classic dome form. Then the areas for the notes (the ovals) are drawn on the surface.

Each oval represents a specific note:

  • E♭

  • F♯

  • D minor

…and so on.

The size and shape of the oval determine the final frequency of the note. It’s not the thickness that changes, but the geometry of the sounding area.

How Is a Handpan Tuned?

This is the most common question.

Handpan tuning is done exclusively with a hammer.

No keys are turned. No strings are pulled.

The maker works by striking the metal surface with millimeter precision to achieve:

  • The fundamental

  • The octave

  • The fifth

Each note of the handpan contains these three harmonic frequencies. It’s a job that requires sensitivity, a trained ear, and experience.

A skilled handpan maker may take years to understand how the shape reacts to each strike and which structure produces a specific pitch.

Where Did the Handpan Come From?

The handpan was invented in Switzerland in the early 2000s and then spread worldwide.

Today, it’s a global instrument, but its production remains handcrafted. Every instrument is unique.

Why Is D Minor the Most Famous Scale?

The natural D minor scale has become the most popular because it was one of the first scales distributed internationally.

It’s a scale that is:

  • Emotional

  • Meditative

  • Cinematic

For this reason, it’s still one of the most requested scales for professional handpans.

How Long Does It Take to Make a Handpan?

Making a handpan can take:

  • 1 month for basic 9-note instruments

  • 2 months or more for handpans with 15–21 notes

Each phase includes stabilization periods to ensure that the tuning lasts over time.

Does a Handpan Go Out of Tune?

If made correctly, the tuning is stable over time.

Cold does not pose a problem (it can be played even at very low temperatures), while excessive heat can make the metal more malleable. It’s always recommended to store it at room temperature.

Should You Build or Buy a Handpan?

Many musicians start by playing. Then curiosity arises: how does it really work?

From here, many artisans’ journeys begin: understanding the sound, studying the material, transforming steel into music.

Building a handpan combines:

  • Technique

  • Listening

  • Sensitivity

  • Experience

Handcrafted Handpan: One Instrument, One World

Behind every handpan, there is:

  • Design

  • Manual hammering

  • Fine tuning

  • Harmonic control

  • Final finishing

It’s not just a musical instrument. It’s a balance between metal and vibration.
